How to Read a Kundli Matching Report

A line by line guide to reading a Kundli matching report. What each koota means, how to read Nadi and Bhakoot, Manglik checks and what to ask next.

You enter two sets of birth details, press a button, and a full page of numbers, tables and Sanskrit terms appears. Most families look at the total, feel either relieved or worried, and close the page.

The rest of the report holds the useful part. This guide walks through a typical Kundli matching report section by section, so you know what each part means and which lines deserve a second look.

Section 1. Birth details

Every report starts with the details it used. Check these before anything else.

If the time or the city is wrong, everything below it may be wrong too. The Moon moves through a Nakshatra in about a day, so a time that is off by a few hours can change the Nakshatra and the score. A birth place in a different state can shift the Lagna.

Section 2. The Ashtakoot table

This is the heart of the report. It lists eight kootas, the points each one can carry, and the points this match received.

Koota Maximum What a low score suggests
Varna 1 Different approach to duty and work, a minor factor
Vashya 2 Less natural influence over each other
Tara 3 Birth stars that are less supportive of each other
Yoni 4 Differences in physical and intimate nature
Graha Maitri 5 The Moon sign lords are not friendly, so the mental wavelength may differ
Gana 6 Different basic temperaments, for example Deva and Rakshasa
Bhakoot 7 The Moon signs sit in a difficult relation, which is said to affect family welfare and finances
Nadi 8 Both share the same Nadi, which tradition links to health and children

Read the table from the bottom up. Nadi and Bhakoot carry the most weight, then Gana and Graha Maitri. A low Varna or Vashya rarely changes a decision.

Section 3. Doshas and cancellations

Good reports flag doshas separately from the table.

Nadi dosha appears when Nadi scores zero. Look for a line that says whether it is cancelled. Classical rules cancel it in some cases, for example when both share the same Rashi but different Nakshatras, or the same Nakshatra but different Rashis.

Bhakoot dosha appears when Bhakoot scores zero. It comes in three forms, called 6 and 8, 2 and 12, and 5 and 9. It is often cancelled when the lords of both Moon signs are the same planet or are friends.

If the report shows a dosha but says nothing about cancellation, that does not mean there is none. It may only mean the calculator does not check for it. This is a good question to take to an astrologer.

Section 4. Manglik check

Many reports show Manglik status for each person. It is usually checked from the Lagna and sometimes also from the Moon and Venus.

Read this section in three steps.

  1. Is either person Manglik?
  2. Is it full or partial?
  3. Is it balanced, either because both are Manglik or because a cancellation rule applies?

A Manglik on one side and a non-Manglik on the other is the case families ask about most. It is worth a full reading, not an instant rejection.

Section 5. The verdict line

Most calculators end with a one line verdict, such as "Good match" or "Not recommended". This line is based almost entirely on the total score and a few simple rules. Treat it as a summary, not a judgment.

What a report cannot tell you

A Guna Milan report looks mainly at the Moon. It does not read the 7th house, the strength of Venus and Jupiter, or the planetary periods the couple will go through after marriage. These need a full chart reading.

It also cannot tell you whether two people respect each other, agree on where to live, or share the same idea of family life. These come from honest conversation, not from software.

Questions to ask after you read the report

A calm view

A Kundli matching report is a tool for asking better questions. Read past the total, check the doshas and the cancellations, and let an experienced astrologer look at both charts when the result is close. Then give equal weight to what you learn when the two people talk.
