In many Indian families, the first question after "Do you like the profile?" is "Have the Kundlis been matched?" Guna Milan is the most common way to answer that. Yet many people see a number out of 36 and don't know what it means, or what to do with it.
This guide explains the score in plain words, so your family can use it as a helpful guide rather than a source of worry.
What Guna Milan is
Guna Milan, also called Ashtakoot Milan, compares the birth charts of the boy and the girl using the position of the Moon at the time of birth. It looks at eight areas of compatibility, called kootas. Each koota carries a fixed number of points, and together they add up to 36.
The eight kootas
| Koota | Points | What it looks at |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Spiritual temperament and approach to work |
| Vashya | 2 | Natural attraction and mutual influence |
| Tara | 3 | Health, wellbeing and fortune together |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical and intimate compatibility |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Mental wavelength and friendship |
| Gana | 6 | Basic nature and temperament |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Family welfare, finances and growth |
| Nadi | 8 | Health and progeny |
The higher the points a koota carries, the more weight it has in the overall match. This is why Nadi and Bhakoot get special attention from astrologers.
How to read the score
On ShadiGiva we use these bands.
| Score | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Below 18 | Not recommended without a closer look |
| 18 to 23 | Average, workable with understanding |
| 24 to 27 | Good match |
| 28 to 32 | Very good match |
| 33 to 36 | Excellent match |
18 is the traditional minimum. But the total alone doesn't tell the full story. A 26 with Nadi dosha can need more thought than a 20 with no doshas at all.
Nadi and Bhakoot dosha
When Nadi scores zero, it is called Nadi dosha. When Bhakoot scores zero, it is Bhakoot dosha. Families often worry when they see these.
What many people don't know is that classical texts describe several conditions where these doshas are cancelled, for example when certain planetary lords are the same or friendly. This is why a full reading by an experienced astrologer matters more than the number on a screen.
What Guna Milan does not tell you
Guna Milan is based mainly on the Moon. It doesn't look at the full birth chart, the strength of the 7th house, Manglik status, or the timing of planetary periods. It also cannot measure kindness, honesty, shared values or how two people handle a bad day.
That is why ShadiGiva pairs the Kundli score with the Mind & Values compatibility test. Astrology shows one side of the match. Values and temperament show another.
Getting an accurate match
The score is only as good as the birth details behind it.
- Use the exact time of birth from the birth certificate or hospital record if you have it.
- Use the city of birth, not the city where you live now.
- If the time is unknown or approximate, mention it. A small change in time can change the Nakshatra and the score.
A balanced way to use it
Use the score to start a conversation, not to end one. If two people get along, share values and their families feel comfortable, a lower score is worth a proper consultation before saying no. And a high score is a good sign, not a guarantee.
You can check Guna Milan for free on ShadiGiva using both sets of birth details. For a deeper reading, the full chart is available on KundliGiva.
When two scores do not match
Families often receive one total from a relative, another from a temple priest, and a third from a website. The Moon's nakshatra is the usual reason. A birth time that is off by twenty minutes can move the Moon into the next nakshatra, and several kootas then change. The city of birth matters too. The chart is calculated for the place of birth, not for the city where the person lives now.
Ask both readers which time and which city they used. If those differ, the scores are not really disagreeing. They are answering different questions. On ShadiGiva the free match uses the birth details saved on the two profiles, so both families can see the same eight kootas instead of two handwritten totals.
What to read besides the total
A score of 24 and another score of 24 can describe very different charts. Read the row, not only the sum.
- Nadi at zero is the line families pause on. In the traditional reading it concerns health and children. It does not mean the couple cannot have children. It means the charts need a fuller look before anyone decides.
- Bhakoot at zero is the line about family welfare and finances. Zero is a reason to ask an astrologer, not a reason to close the file.
- Graha Maitri and Gana together say a great deal about whether two temperaments can share a house. A strong score here often shows up in real life as an easy conversation.
- Varna is only one point. A low Varna score should not decide a match by itself.
If the total sits in the Good or Very Good band and Nadi and Bhakoot are not zero, most families can move on to a meeting. If the total is Average, or if Nadi or Bhakoot is zero, keep the conversation open and take one careful reading before a yes or a no.
How to talk about the score at home
Share the full table, not a single number in a WhatsApp line. A message that says "only 19" frightens people who have not seen the bands. On ShadiGiva, below 18 is Not recommended, 18 to 23 is Average, 24 to 27 is Good, 28 to 32 is Very Good, and 33 to 36 is Excellent. Average is still a workable match when the people and the families fit.
Decide in advance who will speak to the priest, and agree that one reading is enough unless the birth time is in doubt. Sending the same charts to five people usually produces five opinions and a stalled rishta. Write down the time and place that were used, and keep that note with the biodata.
Guna Milan and the rest of the match
The score does not replace a meeting, a family conversation, or the Mind & Values questionnaire. A high score with no shared plan about city, work, or children still needs those talks. A modest score with calm answers on both sides is often worth a second meeting. Kindness, honesty, and how a person speaks about their parents never appear in the 36 points.
Use the free match before anyone travels. Take the birth certificate or the hospital slip if you have it. Write the time as it is printed, and name the town of birth. If the time is unknown, say unknown. A guessed time that looks precise is worse than an honest blank, because it produces a confident score that may be wrong.
A simple order for families
- Confirm the date, time, and place of birth on both sides.
- Run one Guna Milan and keep that sheet.
- Read Nadi and Bhakoot before you argue about the total.
- If those lines are clear, or if a priest has explained a cancellation, meet the person.
- Use Mind & Values, and a second conversation, before anyone fixes a wedding date.
Treated this way, Guna Milan does the job it was meant to do. It helps a family look carefully. It does not take the decision away from the two people who will live the marriage.
